Learning how to mix music

For starters if you want to learn how to dj mix one must have dj equipment. Basic equipment beginners need are: speakers, headphones, amplifier, turntables, needles and a mixer.

I know dj controllers are packaged units with all included mixer, midi effects, and jog wheels etc.  I’m not preventing anyone from starting out this way. Yet again, it is defeating the whole purpose of the djing art before laptops came into play.

So please I’m trying keeping it real with just the one’s and two’s. Brands such as: Technics, Stanton, Pioneer, Shure, Numark, Rane are excellent dj equipment brands that professional dj use.

There are 3 different set-ups

  1. Handicap
  2. Regular
  3. LA Battle

Handicap is when both turntables are at either the left or right side of the mixer. This set-up help djs to mix tracks on their dominant hand side when mixing or scratching.

Regular is when the mixer is set-up in the middle. In applying this set-up you are ambidextrous using both sides right and left sides of the turntables.

LA Battle is regular but with turntables tone arm and pitch controls are set-up on top. This set-up mainly used for competition and battles. Easy for turntablism dj trick juggling since the set-up length size has shorted. Compared with the regular set-up.

I do not want to get into the controllers and cdj’s just yet because of the simple fact. Turntables especially are still the meat and potatoes of the djing world. Plus you can find cheap dj turntables online. In many brands.

Not to step on anyone’s toes here who own expensive controllers and cdj’s. Definitely don’t want to offend djs who have the latest gadgets. I want beginners to learn the djing art before there was laptops and computers.

2 turntables, 1 mixer, 1 Microphone, 1 pair of needles, amplifier and some speakers is all that’s needed to run a party. There is something to be said about records. The complaint I always heard from dj’s is not having to carry all the extra heavy crates of records anymore to their gigs?! “I can just bring my laptop to the club.”

I miss records being played at the club so when there was a switch between analog to digital. Music lost its feeling…. When music went digital it lost 6db compared to analog. Digital waves are still squared compared to a sine wave that forms peaked curves.

Digital just has a high and low without mid range. Do a comparison on 33rpm records vs 45rpm vs digital. If you find they all sound the same? You will be hugely mistaken!

Music selections must have a consistent beat or bpm. Types of music genres with dance rhythms and percussive music helps good djs to mix well. Genres such as hip-hop, techno, house, pop, r&b and classic funk are excellent crowd pleasers. Breaks and instrumentals can greatly help your mixing practice.

Mixing without vocals helps’ tremendously when listening to drums and percussion of track songs. Also in part you may use accapellas to mix in with the same or different track songs to match and blend.

I feel this is also a good discussion because of the simple fact that most single records bought before either had a couple of tracks on them with either instrumentals or a separate track with accapella on the B side.

Today’s standard iTunes downloads you are just paying for a single track without dj perks. To see records disappear and go away would be a lost because records displays history.

Record sleeves show cover art and documentation of our past.  I could stare at covers for hours while listening to songs from my favorite artist.

Digging for vinyl is a great way to get out and stretch you legs a little. Dig for records thru garage sales, thrift shops, pawn shops, even antique stores so sometimes you never know where you end up?

I highly suggest to always look locally for records you might find someone who gets rid of gems they don’t need. Fry’s electronics are starting to selling records on their shelves even dj turntables.

DJ Mixing is a skill of how to count and keep time with the beats of a song or track. Beats have a 4/4 systems which counting from 1-4 starting for the beginning of a track or song.

When practicing dj mixing try to pay close attention to the tone arm and needle cartridge for this is where dexterity comes into play in not trying to hit the tone arm with your hand while moving the record back and forth to catch the beat.

In learning dj mixing start by playing and song or beat on one turntable then playing another track to the next turntable combined together on the same bpm pattern creating a blend or beat match.

Newer systems and controllers have a sync button which adjusts and mixes tracks for you, but I feel this is inadequate because even tho both tracks mix together it doesn’t teach you when to mix the song on the break.

DJ Mixing is caused by 2 of the same or different track music connected seemingly together without gaps or pauses.

With the role of equipment and dj mixing the proper way to learn Mixing is timing, hand dexterity and

control of the record and tempo at all times. A good dj knows power of pitch control and knowing what beats are slower and which are faster.
